Kale and Navy Bean Soup

Ingredients
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 onion, diced
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
3 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 cup pearled barley
4 cups low sodium broth
2 teaspoons oregano
1 teaspoon thyme
1 teaspoon savory
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 bunch lacinato kale, destemmed and roughly chopped (about 2 cups packed)
1 15.5 ounce can navy beans, drained and rinsed
grated parmesan cheese, for topping
crushed red pepper, for topping
